Government of Canada invests in County of Wetaskiwin’s Recreational Infrastructure

November 27, 2009
County of Wetaskiwin, Alberta

The County of Wetaskiwin will move forward with upgrading the Winfield Agriplex thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Today, Blaine Calkins, Member of Parliament for Wetaskiwin, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the project, which will strengthen recreational infrastructure in the Hamlet of Winfield.

Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our Government is proud to support the Winfield Agriplex upgrade project,” said MP Calkins. “Investments such as this are key to building vibrant and healthy communities while ensuring residents continue to have access to modern recreational services for years to come.

Funding of $121,333 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Project funding will allow the County of Wetaskiwin to replace an existing ice plant in the Winfield Agriplex and complete upgrades to the infrastructure surrounding the plant. The improvements to this key piece of recreational infrastructure will ensure the arena can continue serving local residents, as well as the tournaments and other arena events that help to generate a large amount of related business activity in the community.

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.  A total of almost $153 million in RinC funding will be invested across the four western provinces.
