Government of Canada Invests in British Columbia’s Recreational Infrastructure

December 07, 2009
Vancouver, British Columbia

The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade, Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Coquihalla, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, today announced federal funding for 34 projects that will create jobs for British Columbians.

"The Government of Canada, through the Economic Action Plan, is taking immediate action to reduce the effects of the economic slowdown," said Minister Day. "With projects such as these, the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program is not only creating immediate jobs for our community, but is also paving the way for British Columbia's future growth and prosperity."

Funding of $6,499,410 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan.

The projects announced today range in scope, from the renovation of rural recreation facilities in Northern British Columbia to the construction of new trails on Vancouver Island. Each project will create jobs in the immediate future, while providing British Columbians with improved opportunities to lead healthy and active lives.

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.  A total of almost $153 million in RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces.
