Government of Canada Invests in Salmo’s Recreational Infrastructure

December 16, 2009
Salmo, British Columbia

Salmo will move forward with recreational facility improvements, thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade, Minister for the Asia Pacific Gateway and Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Coquihalla, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, today announced federal funding for the project that will revitalize a popular community attraction.

The Government of Canada, through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program, is taking timely targeted action to help put Canadians to work, encourage greater participation in physical activity and use of recreational facilities,” said Minister Day. “This project will ensure that Salmo residents and visitors have access to the essential infrastructure they need today and in the future.

Total federal funding of $6,000 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

With this investment, the Salmo Valley Swimming Pool Society will upgrade the local outdoor swimming pool and lifeguard room. Additional renovations to the change rooms will improve pool access for emergency responders and persons with disabilities.

With the contribution of money from the Recreational Infrastructure Program, the Salmo Valley Swimming Pool Society is now able to proceed with much needed upgrades to the change rooms, that otherwise would have taken another few years to undertake,” said Kevin Misurak, President.

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $153 million in RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces. Western Economic Diversification Canada is delivering the program in Western Canada.
