The Bow Habitat Station Volunteer Society will move forward with the construction of a walking path that will surround the trout pond at Bow Habitat Station thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“By investing in the trout pond area we are helping to ensure that more local youth can get active by participating in Bow Habitat’s activities and programs,
” said the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
The completed pathway will surround a catch and release trout pond, which will also be used as a skating rink during the winter months. Additional project activities include altering the existing roadways and infrastructure to accommodate the new pathway, as well as related landscaping involving the addition of features such as fishing stands, benches, trees and fences. The pathway is expected to make the fishing pond accessible to all visitors and help encourage a greater number of children to take part in the Kids Can Katch program.
Federal funding of $243,591 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Government of Alberta has also contributed $175,000 towards the project.
“The Kids Can Katch trout pond and the programs we can deliver using it, is another step in educating our youth to make informed and responsible environmental choices, while also encouraging them to get outside and get active,
” said Lloyd Horn, President of the Bow Habitat Station Volunteer Society.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $153 million in RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces. Western Economic Diversification Canada is delivering the program in Western Canada.
