Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Parksville’s Community Infrastructure

December 18, 2012
Parksville, British Columbia

Today, Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Alberni on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the rehabilitation of the Parksville Community Park’s sports field under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

Our Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities,” said Dr. Lunney. “By improving facilities such as this, we are helping to boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for Canadians.

Funding of $177,275 will help the City of Parksville undertake significant improvements to the sports field at Parksville Community Park, including the removal of the existing turf and installation of new turf, improvements to the field drainage system, replacement and upgrades of the irrigation system, grading of the lawn slope and completion of accessible pathways for mobility-impaired users. These improvements will increase the safety, accessibility and life-span of the field

The Community Park is the jewel of our City and is our most popular gathering place. The park and its facilities are of significant importance to our region; used by thousands of residents and tourists of all ages,” said Mayor Chris Burger, City of Parksville. “We are indeed fortunate to be given the opportunity to make major improvements to the Community Park sports field, thanks to the generous funding support from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund.

CIIF supports, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure accessible to the public. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
