Governments Partner To Support Kootenay Region Infrastructure

May 21, 2004
Vancouver, British Columbia

The federal and provincial governments are each contributing nearly $4.5 million towards three community infrastructure projects in the Kootenay Region, with a total value of more than $10.5 million. These are among 15 projects announced today, totalling more than $45 million, under the Canada-British Columbia Infrastructure Program.

The Honourable David Anderson, Minister of the Environment and Senior Minister for B.C., on behalf of the Honourable Dr. Rey D. Pagtakhan, Minister of Western Economic Diversification, and John Les, British Columbia Minister of Small Business and Economic Development, announced the funding today.

"From constructing grandstands in Langley to improving a community water system in Chetwynd, I am proud to see communities addressing their infrastructure needs so they are vibrant and prosperous places to live," said Minister Anderson. "The Government of Canada is committed to sustainable development through community-led initiatives that will enhance the social, economic and environmental benefits for everyone."

"Infrastructure projects such as these are the foundation for growth in communities throughout this province," said Minister Les. "These projects will help communities bring out the best in tourism, sport and culture, and will create new economic and employment opportunities."

"These projects reflect our commitment to working with local and federal governments to strengthen and maintain water infrastructure," said Murray Coell, Community, Aboriginal and Women's Services Minister. "Green projects, such as building or upgrading water systems, are integral to safe and healthy communities."

At least 75 per cent of the program's funding is being directed toward "green" projects - water and wastewater systems, water management, and capital expenditures to retrofit or improve the energy efficiency of local government buildings and facilities.

"These projects being announced today will provide an important investment in the quality of life for residents of our communities," said Union of BC Municipalities President Frank Leonard. "We are providing four facilities that promote healthy living through trails, and recreation and sports venues. We are also supporting our youth and cultural communities, and moving our local economies forward through key transportation improvements."

Up to a maximum of 25 per cent of the program's funding will be directed to community projects such as cultural and recreational facilities, infrastructure to support tourism, rural and remote telecommunications, high-speed Internet access for public institutions, local transportation and affordable housing.

Today's announcement brings the total number of approved projects to 289, with a total value of more than $836 million, including nearly $514 million from the federal and provincial governments. The project applicants contribute the remaining costs eligible under the program guidelines, plus any additional costs. Federal funding for the projects announced today was provided for in the February 2004 federal budget.
