Federal and Provincial Governments invest over $960,000 in Alberta’s Wireless Industry

November 17, 2006
Edmonton, Alberta

Western Economic Diversification Canada and the Government of Alberta today announced a combined investment of $967,177 towards phase two of the Wireless City initiative, managed by Calgary Technologies Inc.

This initiative brings together wireless service providers, technology producers and end product users to promote Alberta’s wireless industry capabilities, accelerate adoption of wireless technology and increase commercialization opportunities in this sector.

“Canada’s New Government understands that wireless technologies are critical to the future prosperity of our country,” said Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament of Edmonton Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Carol Skelton, Minister of National Revenue and Minister of Western Economic Diversification.  “This investment will permit more individuals and businesses to be exposed to the virtues of Alberta’s wireless technologies. This effort will strengthen Western Canada’s ability to compete locally and internationally.”

Acting Minister of Alberta Innovation and Science, George VanderBurg said, “Wireless City opens up new markets and commercial opportunities for many small businesses in Alberta.  It’s an initiative that brings Alberta’s innovative wireless technologies to global markets.”

“Wireless technology is an increasingly important tool for business and government,” said Allan Scott, President and CEO of Edmonton Economic Development Corp. “To remain competitive, Edmonton companies need to be at the forefront of the exploration and evaluation of these new technologies, and implement them where they make sense.”

“We are very pleased with the results generated by phase 1 of the Wireless City initiative,” said John Masters, President and CEO of Calgary Technologies Inc. (CTI), “and are confident that the Wireless City team will build on those accomplishments in the second phase of the program. CTI is delighted with the success of this partnership with Western Economic Diversification Canada, Alberta Innovation and Science, and Edmonton Economic Development Corporation in promoting Alberta’s wireless technology sector.”

Through this joint investment, the Wireless City initiative will showcase Alberta’s wireless products and services across Alberta and to international markets via demonstrations, tradeshows and the development of the first “Alberta Wireless Solutions Catalog.” Western Economic Diversification Canada is investing $648,177 with the Government of Alberta contributing $319,000.
